Mary Reid Kelley performs scripted narrative videos set within stylized black and white drawings. Inspired by the language of poets of antiquity, Shakespeare, Baudelaire, Swinburne and Poe, Mary creates several replays of classical pieces and Greek myths. Original fictitious characters speaking in poetic rhythmic verse come to life, wearing hand-made costumes. In videos and drawings filled with punning wordplay, Mary presents her take on the clash between utopian ideologies and the realities of women’s lives in the struggle for liberation and through political strife.
