Tsai Ming-liang

Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang’s cinema is composed of long static shots, water, fruits, and sex. Over the course of ten features and various short films, Tsai’s collaboration with the actor and muse Lee Kang-sheng has reimagined contemporary Taiwan into an erotically-charged urban playground. Investigating alienation and the way emotional closeness can elude us even as sexual intimacy, his recent foray into Virtual Reality (VR) provides an immersive experience. What is love and what is sex in our new era? The genre-bending cult hit The wayward Cloud (2015) abounds of romantic longing and surprising provocations. As we truly adore, Tsai blends his signature melancholy, deadpan humour and long takes with a singular use of urban spaces and textures.
